15 Words that mean something different to Startups

What it means: able to move quickly and easily
What it means to Startups: a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams.



Angel

What it means: one of a class of spiritual beings
What it means to Startups: a wealthy individual willing to invest in a company at its earlier stages in exchange for an ownership stake

Branding




What it means: kind, grade, or make, as indicated by a stamp, trademark, or the like
What it means to Startups: not just a company’s logo, website, or product offerings; it’s much more than that. Your brand is how people, including your potential customers, perceive you.

Channel




What it means: a route through which anything passes or progresses
What it means to Startups: a way to get your product or service to customers


Customers




What it means: a person who purchases goods or services
What it means to Startups: The reason your startup exists

Disrupt




What it means: to cause disorder or turmoil in 
What it means to Startups: An innovation that helps create a new market and value network

Elevator




What it means: a moving platform or cage for carrying passengers or freight from one level to another, as in a building
What it means to Startups: a speech that could land you a big investment or backer

Holy Grail




What it means: the bowl used by Jesus at the Last Supper
What it means to Startups: A mythical company that will one day do something better than Apple

Incubator




What it means:  an enclosed apparatus in which prematurely born infants are kept in controlled conditions, as of temperature, for protection and care
What it means to Startups: An organization that offers mentoring, coworking spaces,  technology, and links to customers and investors to help your idea become a reality

Going Lean




What it means: Cutting sugar, fat, and carbs out of your diet
What it means to Startups: A whole new lifestyle and mindset in developing products and services

Networking




What it means: Going to a meetup to get to know some interesting people 
What it means to Startups: building personal connections to build trust and credibility in your business 

Pivot




What it means:  to change direction
What it means to Startups:  to make a structured course correction with a business idea, and then to test a new hypothesis or new business model to see if it works better

Stealth




What it means: secret, clandestine, or surreptitious procedure
What it means to Startups: hide information from competitors, or — as part of a marketing strategy — to manage public image

Traction




What it means:  the adhesive friction of a body on some surface, as a wheel on a rail or a tire on a road
What it means to Startups: a massive adoption of a startup product by users, the point at which the startup become interesting.

Venture




What it means: an undertaking involving uncertainty as to the outcome

What it means to Startups:  a company, a partnership or temporary organization designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model
