The Future of Poland According to Google

By
Serious and the Not So Serious Future Predictions (with a Little Help from Uncle Google)

Did you know that one day Poland is going to be on top of the world as the biggest and wealthiest country? Or that the first person to set foot on Pluto will actually be a Pole? We’ve also just learned who will try to invade us and when and who’s going to be the prime minister in ten years. We found some really cool data about how the country is going to change by the year 2100. Where did we learn all that? Well, Google told us…
What is this all about?
About three years ago Randall Munroe, the creator of xkcd, “a webcomic about romance, sarcasm, math, and language”, came up with a series of predictions about the future based on the almighty and never-ending data of Google. His method was very simple – he searched for phrases like “until the year of x….”. He received some most unexpected results. This year the Polish Society for Future Studies (PTSP), comprised of scientists with their minds set on, well, the future, decided to use the same approach to learn about what’s to come for Poland. It may have started as a joke, but the results are fascinating nonetheless.  Read on...

TechCrunch founder to launch the Next (R)evolution in Chat (K’Sup Exclusive report)

Paul Chen

Imagine if you can chat with anyone in any of the popular apps without having to go to any particular app.  Keith Teare, the co-founder of TechCrunch just showed me something that will revolutionize chat.  Later this week Chat Center will launch.  It is the latest project from Archimedes Labs, the group that brought you TechCrunch.

What is ChatCenter?

It is the ability to chat with people based on a URL.  No apps needed.  You can do it on your PC and smart device.

How do you use it?

You will have to choose a name. It becomes your personal URL for chat. You can chat from your browser or the Chat Center app. (Download here) You can even chat from other chatting apps by sending them a link and the link will open an in-app browser to chat. They are soft launching the app. But you can use the service right now. Just go to: chatcenter.me/download and install the iOS app. As long as the name you want hasn't already been chosen you will be able to claim it from within the app. This is the only way to claim a name.

How is it different from the current chat services?

You can chat to others even while they are chatting on other apps.  You can do it from a simple browser.  If you use the app, you will be notified by your smart device but if you have your browser open, you will be able to see real time updates.   You will never need another app.  The service is cloud based.  All you need to chat with people is to open a bookmark on your browser.  So your bookmark folder becomes your friends list.  It is like having a phone number, but it is a URL.

How do you chat?

You will just go on your friends’ URL and chat with them on the page.  In the app, there will be tabs of your friends in which you tap and then you will chat using the interface screen.

How do you get messages?

If your browser window is open, you will get updates as they chat back with you. If you have the Chat Center app on your smart device, you will be notified. You will also get notified by email if you don't have any of the above opened.

Any other features:

You can Block unwanted people

Later you will be able to:

Create Groups
Create Conference chats
Other chatting apps will be able to incorporate Chat Center into their service by using the open free SDK and using their API.

How will the service monetize?

Businesses will be able to purchase premium branded names.  You can have multiple names via multiple devices.  Selling ads.  Offering Ad free versions.

European Startups: Admit Your Failures!

By  on June 2, 2014

Hub:raum Krakow is a center of innovation backed by Deutsche Telekom and developed for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Its work focuses on supporting innovative businesses in the CEE region through a combination of local teams, vision and expertise with the backing of one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies. These objectives are achieved by providing seed funding, co-working spaces, mentoring and access to the resources of Deutsche Telekom.
The innovation hub is organizing the second edition of hub:raum Krakow Warp – a turbo accelerator dedicated to early-stage startups and creative individuals who want to develop and grow their ideas fast. The name illustrates the power given to young companies through mentoring, workshops and financing. What’s more, the accelerator covers the costs of flight and accommodation for selected startups. The program will take place in Krakow from the 7th to the 14th of June.

We spoke to Jakub Probola, director of hub:raum Krakow, about why Deutsche Telekom decided to open its incubator in Krakow, which has its own characteristic startup stage in CEE, and how you can get 80,000 euro for the development of your business. Read On...

A New Way to Share: Introducing Sher.ly

By  on June 4, 2014

If you haven’t yet heard of Sher.ly, I won’t blame you. After all, the startup’s Kickstarter campaign only launched at 9 am this morning, Warsaw time, while their software is still in beta testing. Nonetheless, some eight hours later it’s already made it to Kickstarter’sdiscover page, and is trending at #2 on today’s top ten! Add that to the splash they made at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin last year, and we’re looking at a serious competitor on the global stage.
So what is it, and why is it already generating so much hype on both sides of the Atlantic? To find out, I spoke with Sher.ly COO Marek CieÅ›la.

Bitspiration: First of all – what exactly is Sher.ly? Is it software? Is it hardware? Both?

Marek CieÅ›la: That’s a good question. Sher.ly is actually software that is like BitTorrent Sync but for business. It uses protocols that enable on demand channels between peers or computers to exchange data between themselves without the use of external servers or public clouds. That’s the first aspect.

We knew that the service itself was great, but of course it had some disadvantages. For example, if you’re using the software on your laptop and you switch your laptop off but still want to share your data with someone else, it’s inaccessible. That’s why we decided to create storage that will host and sync and do local backups of your files and your friends’ or teams’ files even when your laptop is switched off, like a normal network.    Read on...

Pioneers Unplugged Krakow: UPDATE!

By: Paul Chen

Hello Krakow,

Here is an update about Pioneers Unplugged Krakow.  Like I said, the Pioneers people are really excited to have it in Krakow.  I think the event will give Krakow much needed international exposure as well as get some more international talent to come here to give talks.  I have so far gotten Dermot Corr the organizer of Tech Saturdays in Wroclaw as the MC.  I have people from NCBiR coming in from Warsaw to give a chat about their program as well as Harimata, fresh off their win at Singularity CEE in Budapest.  I also have Kinderd Group, one of the biggest digital media groups from the Czech Republic coming.  There are a few awesome surprises to be announced.   We need to have 100 subscriptions to get the people from Vienna to come.  We have about 88 sign-ups so far.  We need at least 12 more to get it to officially happen, so what are you waiting for?     We also need your help.  Any help would be gladly accepted, be it promotion or others.  Innovation Nest and Hub:raum are already on board.  Thank you in advance.  Just like #OMGKRK, I believe this is the next great step for the Krakow Startup Community.  Let's make it happen!

Sincerely,
Paul

Why Pionners Unplugged in Krakow?

By Paul Chen

Pioneers Unplugged is a one night event held in cities all over Europe and now in New York and Dubai.  It is licensed by the people who brought you Pioneers Festival in Vienna.  In 2013 Forbes Magazine called Pioneers 2013,"A smarter SWSX".  It is an event that brings together industry leaders, startups, and tech forward thinking people from all over the world.  The event takes place in the Imperial Hofburg Palace, home of the Austrian National Library, the President of Austria, and the famous Spanish Riding School.  With tickets starting at just under 300 Euros, it is indeed one of Europe's premium startup events.  This year they are bringing together the heads of 500 Startups, Cisco, Edventure Holdings, and Rethink Robotics.  Participants in previous events have raised over 55 million Euros in funding.

The people at Pioneers had an idea of making Pioneers more accessible to more people as well as promote the idea of being a "pioneer" in tech so Pioneers Unplugged was born.  It has been held in cities like Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and recently in Poland's own Wroclaw.  The point of the evening is to get people together to network and bring high quality speakers with inspirational talks, as well as allowing people to get their hands on some new pieces of technology.

Why should Krakow have one?  The reason is clear.  Krakow is at the threashold of exploding on the international scene.  We have a city overflowing with fresh and educated talent.  Local startups are popping up all the time.     We have some infrastructure such as co-working spaces and local and international accelerators to support these startups.  And we bring a lot of extra value to our western partners.  We have many local events like Hive Swarms, Startup Stage, and Krakspot.  We also have longer international events like Startup Weekend, Tedx, and Bitspiration.   The great thing about Pioneers Unplugged is that it is a nice marriage of a internationally recognized brand and high quality content in a neatly packaged one night event.  Additionally, it is not expensive.  With a ticket price of under 12 Euros, you get a lot of value for your money.

The benefits from such a event is that Krakow would be put on a map of cities that hold international brand name events.  It connects Krakow to the other Pioneer Unplugged hosting cities such as Copenhagen, Riga, and Dubai.  The fact that the Pioneers name is attached to the event brings with it certain prestige.  Because of this brand, we will have a chance to bring higher caliber talent to speak at our city.  It makes it easier to get technology developers to show their wares in Krakow.  And local talents and supporters will gain a high degree of exposure on an international channel.   As an added bonus, attendees will have a chance to win a ticket to this year's Pioneers event in Vienna in the month of October.

The event is set to take place in Hubraum's brand spanking new office space on May 26, 2014 starting at 6:00 pm.  It will be a wonderful way to start Geek Week with a bang.  We already have a wonderful masters of ceremony lined up.

Organizing this event will not be easy.  We will need your help.  Currently, we are collecting subscriptions to news about the event so please sign up here: http://eepurl.com/RpC4f . If we get over 100 sign-ups it will tell the people of Pioneers that we are interested and it will happen. We have already half of the signatures, needed. Will you help us to get beyond 100? To the people who have already signed up, we want to thank you for stepping up!  And be sure to go to the Facebook fan page (https://www.facebook.com/events/615764855175373/?notif_t=plan_user_joined ) to tell me that you would like to come. First 120 subscribers get reservation privileges.

Addtionally, we need a partner or a co-founder to help me organize it.   We also need someone to help with marketing and fund raising.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.   Let's bring a night of awesome  technology and inspirational speeches to Krakow and get something great to happen here before Warsaw! Welcome aboard!
